Hi Guido, from your experience in building N/A engines (like the one in the blue NB) do you think that VVT adds anything worth considering to such build, or is it just easier to build and tune pre-facelift 1.8 without VVT. Have you built any 1.6 in similar manner? (also funny to see such small radiator cooling beast of an engine like that)

Hi Robo96,

before I answer You that question have a look on this:

This is the car of a good friend of our company. The look of the car is really cool, but the engine is a tough one.

A BP block, reamed to 2 liters with an individual throttle body, race header, adjustable camshaft gears, race camshafts, revving to 8200rpm producing 230hp.
The sound the engine produces, is incredible! It screams like a race car! I think the owner, Jean Claudio Flensberg, has a good taste. ;)

How is it with legality of those projects? Time to time we read stories about German Police confiscating tuned cars etc... Kinda surprising considering how large the german tuning scene & business is..

Hey janota,

it is right. We have a problem with the police stopping tuned cars and taking them from street.
But our cars are all TUV approved. 3 times a week a professional from the TUV comes to our workshop and checks our work or the work of the customer.
If he approves it, he creates a document for that and then you are street legal.
The problem is the police questions these documents because of illegal cars with these kind of documents.

It can happen that they take away your car to an independent professional for car modifing. He checks whether the car is illegal or not.
Normally, if everything is alright you get you car back but until this point your car is taken away.

We have the advantage the MX-5 is not so often on street like modified Volkswagen or Audis so the police doesn't recognize it that fast.

Hopefully it gets better with the time.

We say for normal ITB conversions with not to aggressive camshafts, the VVT is an advantage for a better torque curve. If You go that extreme like the blue NB or the blue NA, the VVT doesn't give a big advante. Maybe just a thew Nm and Hp on the dyno, but you don't get better driveability or more power.

Edit: I forgot to say something about the 1.6L. We already built B6 engines with ITB and aggressive cams, but never went over 160hp with these, because if the customer is interested in much natural aspirated horse power we recommend a BP swap and then go to the limits with this engine because there we can reach more power and torque than with the 1.6L engine.

This is a really nice sleeper setup. A 1.8L NA with a GT3071R turbocharger producing more than 350hp.
The owner doesn't want a rollover bar because he wants to keep the sleeper look.

This a good example for a really tough build! We made the car ready for Time Attack races, but the car is still allowed to drive on street.

The acceleration is incredible! :O

This is a supercharged NC from a good friend of the company. The car got a Rotrex C30/94 on its 2.0L installed producing 303hp and 314Nm.
Also the car got a nice look with it shiny rims and low coilover setup.

I think Kermit likes that. ;)

this is our second MX-5 ND. It is wrapped in british racing green and has some cool stuff installed. It is also our first car with a 200hp package with a full exhaust system including race header and software tuning.

It has also following parts installed:

3 weeks ago we took part at the German TimeAttack Finals and the European TimeAttack at the Nürburgring. Our race cars performed well, but our red ND just got a little accident. Nevertheless we celebrated many victories in different classes. It was a great season ending!
